Invisalign and Braces: Low Risk, High Reward

With the right orthodontist, you’d be amazed at the stunning results that are possible with treatments such as braces and Invisalign. The potential upside is huge.

Sure, nobody wants to wear braces for months—but modern ortho treatments are faster, safer, more comfortable and simply better than ever, and you won’t believe how confident you’ll feel after achieving the smile you’ve always desired.

Are there risks? Absolutely. But by the end of this article, you’ll see how picking the best orthodontist will help you minimize complications and maximize results, both during your treatment and beyond.

What are the risks of Invisalign and braces?

First let us start off by saying this—problems with braces and Invisalign rarely occur.

Although getting braces is relatively risk-free compared to surgery or taking certain medications, every patient is different—with improper care or pre-existing issues, you could run into problems like:

  • Holes and white scars caused by improper brushing
  • Mouth injuries caused by orthodontic appliances (typically only in the case of an accident)
  • Gum recession beginning or worsening
  • Shortening of the roots of your teeth (although usually not harmful)
  • Higher likelihood of previously traumatized or damaged teeth to need a root canal
  • Allergic reactions

More common problems that usually resolve by themselves after a few days or weeks include:

  • Discomfort, especially at first
  • Temporary difficulty speaking
  • Excessive salivation
  • Dry mouth

Rarely, teeth may not move properly during your treatment, which may require further intervention. In some cases, previous dental work may need to be redone.

Which factors increase the likelihood of having problems with braces?

There are four main reasons why patients might have issues with their braces:

  • Improper care during their treatment
  • Improper maintenance of results (failure to wear a retainer)
  • An unforseen biological response, such as allergies
  • Choosing the wrong orthodontist

In fact, most problems are caused by improper care, and that’s especially true for Invisalign—the biggest issue patients have with Invisalign is that they simply forget to wear it!

How do I get the best results possible?

Getting great results starts with choosing your orthodontist, and it ultimately ends with you, the patient.

The best orthodontists use modern equipment and treatment plans to help you achieve results fast, with fewer office visits, and with less pain during your treatment. Your orthodontist should answer all of your questions clearly, and help you understand exactly what you’ll need to do during and after your treatment to avoid injuries and maximize your results.

Again, nobody enjoys wearing braces. But when you take your treatment seriously and follow your ortho’s directions, you’re going to love the way you look and feel afterwards. Just take our patients’ word for it.
